The Corn Palace leads to an avoidance of obvious jokes

May 30, 2009 · 2 Comments

I don’t care there isn’t a single one of you who doesn’t find the title of this post funny, I love it.

We stopped by the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD yesterday.  It was quite the site, though – for some unknown reason – Marc claimed he was “expecting more.” After I asked him how you could expect more from a Corn Palace, he said “I dunno, I just kind of thought the whole damn thing would be built out of corn.”

Tough crowd.

The very first Corn Palace was built in 1892, I assume to celebrate the 400th anniversary of Mr. Columbus.  The second was built in 1905. Essentially, they design a new Corn Palace every year – involving corn colored all sorts of different shades and hues.  In the 2009 Corn Palace (which totally kicked 2008’s ass), you can see Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse, and all sorts of fun scenery.

It was definitely neat to see and we were happy when we walked inside the palace to see an auditorium that could house both basketball games and concerts. Today they rolled out the tourist trap and had a whole bunch of Corn Palace paraphernalia for sale. We took the bait and are now proud owners of a corn-butter-patty-applicator for your corn on the cob (pictured with me in the pink hat).

“Rapid City reminds me of the weather channel”

May 30, 2009 · Leave a Comment

“Rapid City reminds me of the weather channel,” Marc stated out of the blue as we were driving down Interstate 90 away from Sioux Falls.  The thought hadn’t occurred to me, but I knew what he meant. There was something about the Weather Channel that seemed to over emphasize the meteorological importance of Rapid City, South Dakota.  If ever there were a random city to report weather disturbances (or otherwise), Rapid City would be at the top of the list.

You find yourself thinking of really imaginative things when you’re on the road in South Dakota.  Prior to our departure, we thought that we would be bored by the landscape.  Instead, we found lush green prairies that roll off into the distance enchanting. They roll so far that sometimes you think you can see for hundreds of miles.

So enjoy some pictures from the road in the southern South Dakota. None of them, contrary to the title of this post, are of Rapid City. You’ll have to stay tuned to the Weather Channel for that.
