As background to this post, feel free to read the post about technology and how we’re connecting to the internet on the road. Also, check out the post about Shadow Mountain. The reason is the subjects of both posts united in dramatic fashion in our last night at Teton.
You see, it all started when Eileen (Marc’s mom) sent us a text message about the blog. She made a reference to the movie “The Twilight Zone” and specifically the opening scene when Albert Brooks (who eerily seems ageless) and a young Dan Akroyd (who definitely does not) are driving in a car, singing Midnight Special by CCR. Al Brooks says “Want to see something really scary?” and he turns out the headlights as they are driving down a windy road. Then Daniel A says “Wanna see something really scary and he turns his head and comes back as a monster and eats Albert Brooks’ neck.
So I had never seen that movie, or at least I don’t remember watching it, but we kept referencing it at different times through the drive.
Imagine this, you’re on top of a mountain, staring at the barely discernable silhouettes of the Grand Tetons and you discover you have cell phone service.
That’s strange, for sure. But now imagine that you connect your laptop to your cell phone and dial up Netflix. You do a quick search and discover that they have “The Twilight Zone” as one of their movies that can play instantly.
And so you download a movie, and you watch it on your laptop, on top of a mountain, looking at one of the world’s most beautiful mountain ranges, surrounded by a forest.
That was our Sunday night. Technology is great. Until that is, your cell phone battery dies right after the conclusion of that opening scene.
