Pictures from Palisades State Park

May 25, 2009 · Leave a Comment

In the afternoon, we went on a hike at the Mississippi Palisades State Park (in Illinois) which overlooks the Mississippi River as it draws out the border between Iowa and Illinois.

The hiking itself was for the most part pretty easy. Still it was a good workout with some tough hills to negotiate and some very steep hills.  Inja, our dog, was the most enthusiastic and subsequently the most tired at the end of the day.

Here’s a blurb from a web site that outlines info on state parks:

Palisades is the word used to describe a line of lofty, steep cliffs usually seen along a river, and Mississippi Palisades, 3 miles north of Savanna in Carroll County, handsomely lives up to its name. Caves are evident as are dangerous sink holes-limestone caves that go straight down. Erosion has carved intriguing rock formations, including Indian Head, with its aquiline characteristics, and Twin Sisters, a pair of humanoid figures on the bluff tops. The U.S. Interior Department recognized the remarkable nature of this area when in 1973 it designated acreage here as a national landmark.

We saw some rock climbers who had conquered some of the rocks mentioned above. The trails wound through the forest and how we got out of the park without poison ivy on our ankles, I still do not know.

Had some fun with a panoramic shot – try to spot what’s wrong with that image…

Big time shout out to our friends Mandy & Kate who are going to tag team on taking care of Inja! Mandy is going to adopt Inja until the 11th of June and Kate is going to take over from there. You have no idea how grateful we are! You guys are awesome!

Also, another shout out to our dear friend Jack, who is taking care of our cats, Itchy & Scratchy (yes, they are actually named that).  In addition, he’s going to keep our houseplants company.  Jack is also our friend who started his own soup business, be sure to check out his web site and if you live in Chicago, order some soups!
